Early Intervention: VIP Services Supporting Brownsville’s Youngest Children with Special Needs

The Early Intervention (EI) Program

The Early Intervention Program supports children from birth to age 3 who may be developing differently from others their age in areas such as learning, playing, talking, or walking. The program partners with families to set meaningful goals and create a plan to help both the child and family reach them.

It is one of the most effective programs out there, and it provides services at no cost to qualifying families that will give their children a leg up.

UB’s Early Intervention Ambassador: Danny Herring

Danielle Herring, Early Intervention Ambassador

The Early Intervention Ambassador is here to walk with you, not just point you in a direction, on any part of your journey around a young child’s needs.

When you first hear that your child may need support, it can feel overwhelming, confusing, and even a little scary. This role exists to make sure you’re not navigating that alone.

It’s not just about services, it’s about helping you understand what’s happening, what your options are, and what’s best for your child and your family. It’s about slowing things down, answering your questions, and making sure you feel confident every step of the way.

Think of her as someone who sits with you in the middle of it between the referral and the services, making sure you feel supported, seen, and clear as you move forward.

Trust Your Instincts

Do I need Early Intervention, or should I wait?

If you have a concern, it’s okay to check. An evaluation doesn’t mean anything is wrong it just helps you understand how your child is growing and if any support could help. Nothing can begin without your permission.

What happens after I get a referral to Early Intervention?

Your child will have an evaluation, and from there, you’ll talk through the next steps together. You won’t have to figure it out alone or all at once, someone will walk you through each part. And you’re always welcome to ask any questions along the way.

Does this mean something is wrong with my child?

No. Every child develops in their own way. Early Intervention is simply support to help your child grow, learn, and thrive.

You don’t have to wait. You can check, ask questions, and take the next step when you’re ready.

Why Early Intervention Matters

✔️ Children who get support early are more likely to build skills like talking, walking, and learning

✔️ Starting early can mean less need for support later on

✔️ Early support helps children feel more confident and comfortable as they grow

✔️ Families feel clearer, supported, and less overwhelmed when they understand what’s happening

✔️ Support happens while your child’s brain is still growing and developing the fastest

✔️ Early Intervention is not about something being wrong—it’s about giving your child what they need, when they need it

Parent Connection

Parent Connection is a welcoming space for families navigating Early Intervention (EI) and the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) to come together in community. It’s a place where you can speak freely, be heard, and feel understood—while connecting with other families who are on a similar journey.

Through guided conversations and shared experiences, families are supported in expressing their thoughts and feelings, discovering their strengths, and learning from one another. This space is not just about information—it’s about building confidence, trust, and the ability to advocate for your child with clarity and purpose.

Parent Connection also serves as an entry point for families in the broader community. Screenings and referrals for EI and CPSE are available, making it easier to access support, ask questions, and take the next step for your child—all in a space designed with care, dignity, and connection in mind.

Advocacy Training

Advocacy training helps you understand your child’s rights, your options, and how to speak up with confidence. You’ll learn how the process works, what to ask for, and how to make informed decisions for your child. This is about making sure you feel prepared, supported, and clear as you move forward.

Annual events

This space brings together resources, support, and real conversations to help you better understand your child’s development and the options available to you. It’s designed to make things feel less overwhelming and help you take your next steps with clarity and confidence.
