In a recent United for Brownsville meeting, residents and service providers spoke about how the continued violence against Black people by police and those with power is not an abstract concept for the residents of Brownsville, Brooklyn. Among many things, we heard that:
They fear for the lives of their children, relatives, friends, and neighbors on a daily basis.
They are tired of calls for a national conversation, small reforms, or patience.
They are appalled at the anti-Black racism that prevents too many in our country from understanding that so basic and so American a right as the right to life should apply to Black people as much as to whites.
UB stands against the deaths of George Floyd and too many others, ongoing police brutality, and those who have risen up in protest in Brooklyn and around the country. We declare our support for the protests and one simple truth: Black Lives Matter.
